Description

Union Cavalry General George Stoneman Clipped Signature and Two Cartes de Visite. A signature, 1.2" x 3.5", from a document signed as Captain of the 2nd Cavalry, circa 1860. Together with two images; the first is a fantastic albumen, 3/4 standing pose in full uniform holding his hat and officer's sword. 2.5" x 4", on a mount with a paper label on verso over the original backmark, reading, "Earle's Galleries & Looking Glass... Philadelphia." Clipped corners, and gently toned. Pencil identification on verso. The second image is a bust portrait with an "R.W. Addis... McClees Gallery" of Washington backmark. Period identification in ink on front mount, with light soiling and foxing; the mount has been trimmed at top affecting the albumen, but well away from the central image. Stoneman (1822-1894) commanded cavalry forces at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville; he later served under Sherman in Georgia.
