Description

Post-Civil War Letter from a Louisiana Planter to Governor Benjamin G. Humphreys of Mississippi. Six pages, 4.5" x 7.25"; "Franklin Plantation, Lake St. Joseph Tensas Parish, Louisiana;" November 27, 1866. Dr. Allen T. Bowie writes to Governor Humphreys of his dire straits as the result of the war. In part: "...I am now a ruined man - the late war has completely crushed me. I have not a cent or place or home I can call my own. Gen. Grant's army visited my Plantation in the Spring of 1863, burnt my dwelling with all its contents, my gin house, and cotton house, and saw mill house all full of cotton (full five hundred bales of cotton) burnt my barns and stables full of corn and provender, the overseer house and half of the negro cabins, the black smith shop and tool house with all my farming implements and even my poultry buildings and inclosures, and in addition to all this, the Confederates burnt, for fear it would fall into the hands of the enemy, nine hundred and thirty eight bales of my cotton, and burnt my gin house on my Glen Allen place and the saw mill back of my home place, and now all my lands have been decreed to be sold by the late court for old debts..." Bowie adds that he has been advised to petition Congress for redress and asks if Humphreys will write a letter on his behalf if he decides to file the petition. He asserts that he had been against secession and had predicted the outcome. Bowie had been a physician and his mansion was considered one of the grandest.
