Description

Confederate General Albert G. Blanchard Letter Signed with Rank. One page, 7.5" x 9.75"; Monroe, Louisiana; August 7, 1862. Blanchard writes to Assistant Adjutant General Manning M. Kimmel transmitting an extract from a letter from Louisiana Governor Thomas O. Moore "for the consideration of Maj. Genl. Van Dorn." The extract reads: "A letter recd this morning from the Colonel of Catahoula informs the Governor that Martial Law was proclaimed in that parish and Tensas and Concordia by Genl Dahlgren, a Mississippi Militia Officer. Of course no such proclamations will be respected. Mississippi Militia Officers cannot be indulged in such vagaries."

Blanchard adds: "I would ask the Maj. Genl. Commdg. East of the Mississippi to prevent the recurrence of any such interference as it necessarily engenders ill feeling upon the part of the State Authorities and embarrasses the actions of Confederate Officers in their operations in this State." Lengthy docket on verso citing the content of the letter.

By the date of this letter, Blanchard is serving in a largely administrative capacity. He had last commanded troops at the Battle of Seven Pines, but his troops were held in reserve.

General Dahlgren is Charles Gustavus Dahlgren, brother of Union Admiral John A. Dahlgren. Dahlgren had raised two Mississippi regiments, but his brigade was transferred to the Provisional Army of the Confederate States and he lost his command.

Condition: Flattened folds with light toning. A bit of show-through from docket on verso. Tiny separations at the folds at margins. Verso has soiling along the folds.

Provenance: From the Private Collection of a Mississippi Gentleman.
