Description
Perished at Little Big Horn, Yates writes a letter requesting a position in the Cavalry
George W. Yates Autograph Letter Signed. One page of a
bifolium, 8" x 10", New Jersey; November 19, 1866. Writing to Major
General L. Thomas, Adjutant General of the U.S. Army, Yates
requests that Thomas consider him for the position of Captain in
one of the new cavalry regiments of the regular U.S. Army. Yates
writes, in part, "I have served in the armies of the United
States for a period of nearly six years, during more than four of
which I was a Volunteer and since March 1866 a Second Lieutenant in
the 2nd Regiment U.S. Cavalry with my regiment." Signed, "I
am General / very respectfully / your obt. Servant / Geo. W. Yates
/ 2.d Lieut / 2nd U.S. Cavalry." Docketed on verso and
accompanied by Adjutant General's original transmittal cover. After the end of the Civil War, President Andrew Johnson turned his attention to re-establishing control of the western frontier. Although the U.S. government had been trying to subjugate the western territories since the 1830s, progress had been stalled with the onslaught of the Civil War and the transfer of most of the regular soldiers to the Union cause. Accordingly, in 1866, Johnson ordered the organization of several new regiments to increase the Army's presence in the region.
Yates did, in fact, receive a position as Captain with the 7th Cavalry in 1866. There, he served under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and fought in some of the largest battles of the Indian Wars. A member of the "Custer Gang," Yates participated in campaigns against the Cheyenne across the Great Plains, the Lakota Sioux in the Yellowstone Expedition, and the Dakota Sioux in the Black Hills Expedition. In 1876, Yates was on the front lines of the Battle of Little Bighorn, where he died in battle. Accounts suggest that Yates took control of the regiment after Custer was killed.
Condition: Creased along folds. Slight toning to the verso of the integral page. Envelope toned with pencil notations on verso.
