Description

James Wilkinson Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 7.75" x 10"; Washington County, Mississippi; October 5, 1814. Wilkinson writes to Stephen Minor about the misadventures of a soldier who had inherited his uncle's fortune, a friend's attempts to reclaim land, and comments on the ongoing War of 1812. He writes, "I could rejoin you in Command & I would do it, if I were not sure the Enemy would be before me at N. Orleans, or that they would take the place from me were I there - a peace, of which we have not the least Hope, can alone save your Country, as I understand all of our defenses have been neglected & some of them destroyed, and your defensive force will probably be drawn away towards Pensacola, there to be left, when the Enemy sails for N. Orleans - all this entre nous." Wilkinson had been assigned to the St. Lawrence theater of the war in 1813 and during that time, engaged in two failed campaigns and was relieved of his command.

Stephen Minor was a plantation owner who had acquired his land as grants from the Spanish Governor Manuel Gayoso de Lemos. Minor had been his Secretary after serving as a Captain in the Spanish Army.

Condition: Flattened folds with some wear resulting in separations and loss of paper where the folds intersect, a few of which have been reinforced at an earlier time. A few areas of ink burn. Paper loss on the integral page, not affecting any text, from where the seal has been torn open. Wax seal remains and obscures a single word at the conclusion of the letter and the very tip of the last letter in Wilkinson's signature. Tape repair to three spots.

Provenance: From the Private Collection of a Mississippi Gentleman.
