Description
Jeffery Amherst Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7" x 8.75" (sight), New York; April 24, 1761. Amherst writes, in part, "I have tryed [sic] to get some men to Albany as fast as possible, there will be many seamen amonghst [sic] them, half of them will be of great service to send them to Lt Grant... and if the other half can be sent to Oswego, they will be useful there. I am assured two companys [sic] will set off tomorrow, employ those who are not seamen as you think proper." Signed, "I am your most obedient servant, Jeff. Amherst." Matted and framed to an overall size of 9.75" x 11.5".Amherst served as the commander of the British Army during the Seven Years' War. He is credited for being the mastermind behind the British plan to conquer New France by capturing key cities like Louisbourg, Quebec City, and Montreal. Amherst left behind a controversial legacy in the Americas. Although he became the first governor-general of the newly British Canadian territories, he also actively tried to exterminate indigenous communities by allegedly gifting them blankets infected with smallpox.
Condition: Creased along folds and toned throughout. Minor stain to lower left corner, affecting signature. Pencil notations at upper left corner. Not examined outside of the frame. Pencil notation to lower left corner.
