Description

W. Kemble. Texas and Part of Mexico & the United States, showing the Route of the First Santa Fe Expedition. New York: Harper And Brothers, 1844. Originally issued in George Wilkins Kendall's narrative of the Texan Santa Fe Expedition. 12 x 16 1/2 inches (sight), matted and framed to an overall size of 20 x 25 inches. This map of the Republic of Texas was issued under President Mirabeau Lamar just a year before Texan statehood. It shows the border of the Republic extending west of the Rio Grande and North to include Santa Fe. Texas's borders are outlined in red.

In 1841, Lamar launched the Santa Fe Expedition in an attempt to convince Santa Fe to join Texas, establishing an easy trade route between Texas and New Mexico. When they arrived, the Texans were met with strong resistance, and were marched to Mexico City as prisoners of war; the "Route of the Texas Prisoners" is shown on the map. Kendall was one of the members of the expedition, and his account, published in 1844, was a sensational success, giving the map widespread exposure. Martin & Martin write that "the map, along with the narrative, stimulated renewed interest in Texas and represented another major step toward the inevitable solution to the Texas question later in the decade."

Condition: Not examined out of frame. Lightly toned with smoothed folds. Rough right edge where sheet was removed.
