Description

Felix Mendelssohn Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 4 ½ x 7 ¾ inches (sight); no place; December 23, 1837. A letter to a Madame Kraus sending thanks for a present and enclosing a music score (not present). Writing in German, in part: "We wanted to thank you in person yesterday for your kind present, were prevented from doing so continually, and finally it occurred to me that as thanks for your splendid handiwork, I should also send some handiwork... you remember the solo of a few evenings ago, and perhaps you want to sing through it again now and then. So I am sending it with this and wish that it may give you as much pleasure as your friendly present does me." Signed, "Felix Mendelssohn." Matted and framed with a portrait of Mendelssohn to an overall size of 14 ¾ x 13 ½ inches. Double glazed with the address cover made out in his hand displayed on the verso.

Condition: Gently toned; the ink is lighter at the end of the letter and signature. Light rubbing to frame.

Provenance: Kenneth W. Rendell Gallery. Estate of Ernest Henry Seelhorst; Brenham, Texas.
