Description

Berlioz pens and inscribes music from Benvenuto Cellini to fellow composer, Adolf Müller

Hector Berlioz Autograph Music Quotation Signed "Hector Berlioz." One page, 8 x 8 ¼ inches (sight); Vienna; November 18, 1845. Berlioz pens seventeen measures from his opera Benvenuto Cellini. The composer writes below, "Theme of the air from Benvenuto Cellini in the opera of that name" and inscribes it to Austrian composer, Adolf Müller.

Berlioz composed Benvenuto Cellini between 1834 and 1837 in response to his experiences in Italy. The work was based on Cellini's Vita (Memoirs), which recorded the experiences of the Renaissance artist. It was first composed as an opera comique, but was rejected by the Paris Opera-Comique company. Berlioz reworked the story and offered it to the Paris Opera, where it was accepted in 1836 and performed with poor results in 1838. The experience was a bitter one for Berlioz and fractured his relationship with the company.

The manuscript is matted and framed with an engraving of the composer to an overall size of 22 ½ x 15 inches.

Condition: Bold ink on clean paper.

Provenance: Kenneth W. Rendell Gallery. Estate of Ernest Henry Seelhorst; Brenham, Texas.
