[Revolutionary War]. Soldier's Enlistment Document. One partially printed page, 7 x 2 ½ inches, Connecticut; July 5, 1776. An agreement of voluntary enlistment to join the Continental Army: "I Jed H. Watkins of Ashford do acknowledge to have voluntarily inlisted myself a Soldier, to serve in the Battalion of Foot raised by the Colony of Connecticut, to join the Continental Army in New York, to be commanded by Colonel John Chester Esq; until the Twenty-fifth Day of December next." Signed, "Jed H. Watkins." The document is dated just one day after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. An engraving of the Battle of Harlem accompanies the document.

John Chester fought at Bunker Hill as well as in the Battle of Trenton as a member of Connecticut's troops. He later served as speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives.

Condition: Light toning and stray staining. Offsetting and mounting remnants on verso.
