Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette Autograph Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 7 1/4 x 9 3/8 inches; La Grange; December 20, 1823. A thank you letter for a print received to engraver and future American Bank Note Co. president, Charles Toppan: "I have reasons to fear my acknowledgements for your much valued favor of last spring have not been duly transmitted. Be pleased, in these new testimonies of gratitude to find the expression of the high sense I preserve of the precious gift and of the kind manner in which it has been bestowed. I beg you, sir, to accept and to offer to Mr. Fairman and hand my thanks for this beautiful print of the immortal artist, and the assurances of my high and grateful regard." Signed, "Lafayette."

Condition: Overall even toning, some soiling to external pages; mainly around address leaf, and flattened folds with pinholes at intersections. Small tear at top right corner of recto that has a piece of backing that is no longer reinforcing the tear. Wax seal is still present with small area of paper loss to adjacent side due to being opened.
