Description

Assistant Surgeon Nathan B. Chase Archive. Group of letters and photographs related to Dr. Nathan B. Chase who served as a surgeon in the Union army (1st Ohio Artillery Thomas Division). There are eleven war-date letters written by Chase to his wife or son and six letters or documents written to him. The locales include: Corinth, Mississippi, Tuscumbia, Alabama, Winchester, Tennessee and Bowling Green, Kentucky. The dates range from June 1, 1862 to May 4, 1865. In his first letter, he describes reporting to duty on orders of General Grant, transporting wounded soldiers from Pittsburg Landing and setting up a hospital which he oversees by order of Major General Thomas. In the Tuscumbia letter, he says the Provost Marshal appointed guards to protect the property of the locals, but they responded by destroying the army's only locomotive. They then had to use mules to transport supplies from Corinth ("We are right in the hot bed of secessionism... they are cutting up lots of pranks... I say hang such dogs"). The other letters talk about the rail lines being destroyed, General Bragg and the rebels have cut off their lines of communication, the men are on half-rations, 1800 rebel prisoners from Bragg's army have come in for treatment, there is an exodus of citizens fleeing Hood's advance which captured Hopkinsville, Lyon has advanced with 2500 cavalry, Nashville has strong fortifications but few men to defend them and is therefore vulnerable. His last letter dated May 4, 1865 mentions a family member who went to see President Lincoln's remains in Buffalo, his disappointment at not being able to personally view the President's remains in Springfield and some unspecified business matters. The letters are generally legible and deal primarily with family matters and brief descriptions of his military service and war-related events, as referenced above. Sold together with eight photographs of Chase, his wife, children and home.
