Description

Letter Referencing Bull Run and a White House Reception. 4-page letter written on large bifolium stationery, Washington City, July 18, 1861, from Gill J. Bull to his mother. "... They do business very slowly in this miserable place... I went to the Presidents Weekly reception - a levee... The famed east room is changed for the better. The ceiling being frescoed & the walls papered with a light & cheerful paper... We voted the whole thing a sham... an array of richly tho badly draped persons... I was much surprised in Mrs. Lincoln. I expected to see a pretty & a tasty woman... She is small rather fat & dumpy. The expression of her face is not pleasing nor does it indicate power or energy of character... The President looks better than he did - his face indicates great kindness of heart. He is extremely fond of jokes & humor. Will drop his employments at any time to listen or enjoy them... The Army advanced yesterday along the whole line and the traitors retreated from the Village of Fairfax Court House as our men approached it. Gen. Scott has now opposite Washington & advancing to drive the enemy about 60,000 men a big army truly. The soldiers are in good spirits & will whip the rebels."
