Description
Abraham Lincoln Military Appointment Signed. One partially printed page, 15.5" x 19.5" (sight), City of Washington; July 1, 1864. This document appoints "Abner R. Benedict...Captain in the Fourth Regiment of Infantry in the service of the United States." Countersigned by Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War. With docketing and embossed blue paper seal at top left. Patriotic vignettes at the top and bottom margins. It has been matted and framed with a photographic portrait of Lincoln to an overall size of 31" x 25.75". COA from John Reznikoff at University Archives included. Not examined outside of the frame.Abner R. Benedict (1839-1867) was born and educated in New York City. He initially volunteered for the 12th New York Militia before receiving a commission as 2nd Lieutenant with the 4th U.S. Infantry in August of 1861. Benedict was present at the Battles of Gaines' Mill, Second Bulls Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. At Fredericksburg, Benedict was shot through the lungs while withdrawing his outer picket to place it under cover after seven of his men were wounded. During Gettysburg he was placed in command of his regiment after all his superiors were wounded. After the war Benedict remained on active duty, but died of the wound he received at Fredericksburg August 15, 1867.
Condition: Pinhole through "a" of Stanton's signature. Lightly rubbed with smoothed folds.
