Description

Abraham Lincoln Four-Language Ship's Paper Signed. One sheet, 20.25" x 15.75" (sight), New Bedford; August 24, 1863. This passport, printed in English, French, Spanish, and Dutch authorizes passage of "Frederick A. Smith master and commander of the Barque called Rousseau of the burdens of 305 87/95 tons or thereabouts...bound for Pacific Ocean and laden with Provisions, Stores, and Utensils for a whaling voyage." The Rousseau returned July of 1866 with 1014 barrels of sperm oil. Signed, "Abraham Lincoln." Countersigned by William H. Seward as Secretary of State. With embossed paper seal and blind, embossed seal. Matted and framed to an overall size of 32" x 27.25". Not examined outside of the frame.

Condition: Some separations along folds where paper has weakened. Some bleed through from docketing on verso. Offsetting from paper seal from where the document was folded. Smoothed folds with light toning from age.
