Description

Père Joseph (François Leclerc du Tremblay) Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8 x 11 inches, Chilly; October 13, 1634. Untranslated letter in French regarding Gaston d'Orléans' return and reconciliation with King Louis XIII.

Pére Joseph served as the confidant and agent of Cardinal Richelieu, and was perhaps one of the most influential and controversial clergymen in French history. If Richelieu was known as "the Red Eminence" for his political power, Joseph was remembered as the "gray eminence" for his unofficial influence and decision-making. Here, the Duke of Orléans returns to France after seeking refuge in Flanders for his role in the Battle of Castelnaudary. The battle formed part of a failed attempt to remove the king's chief minister, Richelieu, from power. Orléans would again have to flee one year later after a second failed plot.

Condition: Creased along folds with slight staining to the horizontal crease. Small bit of paper loss to the left margin. Lower left corner is reinforced with archival tissue, and a small hole affecting a single letter of a word in the fifth line of text.
