Description

Churchill makes known that he will not vote in favor of Women's Suffrage: "I do not feel able to vote for Mr. Stanger's Bill "

Winston S. Churchill Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 4 ½ x 7 ½ inches (sight); no place, but embossed seal reads "Colonial Office;" February 27, [1908]. A letter to Howard Cheetham giving his views on a proposed bill for women's suffrage. Marked "Private" at the head, the letter reads:

"I am obliged to you for your letter of the 25th instant and for the full expression of your views it contains.

I do not feel able to vote for Mr. Stanger's Bill on Friday next for reasons which I have several times explained publicly. I am not prepared to say that I am unfavourable to the general principle of votes for women, although I cannot help being impressed with the dangers and difficulties associated with that most grave proposal.

Yours ...ly
Winston S. Churchill"

Henry Yorke Stanger was a Liberal MP and introduced his bill in favor of Women's Suffrage in 1908. As he states in this letter, Churchill did not support the bill. His position on Women's Suffrage was cautious and he opposed extending full parliamentary voting rights to women, preferring a more gradual and limited approach. Churchill's views evolved over time, and he would eventually come to support the Representation of the People Act of 1918 that granted women over the age of 30 who met certain property qualifications the right to vote.

Matted and framed with double glass so that both sides of the letter can be viewed, to an overall size of 12 ½ x 18 ¾ inches. An old description by noted bookseller Charles J. Sawyer states that the letter was from the papers of Lord Trenchard.

Condition: Flattened folds, light creasing and age-toning. Small split at center of horizontal fold. Frame has heavy wear, chipping and a split to the wood at bottom. Not examined out of the frame.

Provenance: Charles J. Sawyer, Bookseller.
