William L. Marcy Document Signed.One page, 6.5" x 7"
Albany; June 6, 1836
Printed document on State of New York, Executive Department letterhead signed "W.L. Marcy" as Governor at bottom right, addressed to Mississippi governor Charles Lynch transmitting "a copy [not present] of the Report and Resolutions adopted by that body on the subject of domestic Slavery, and the proceedings of the Abolitionists; and request that the same may be laid before the Legislature of your
State."
The previous month Congress had passed a "gag rule" that automatically tabled any action on all petitions related to slavery without hearing them. The document offered here is an attempt by New York (a predominantly anti-slavery state) to inform Mississippi (staunchly pro-slavery) of its discourse on the topic of slavery. Although Governor Marcy was considered to be a Southern Sympathizer, the political statements embodied in the report would not have been lost on Mississippi.
Condition: Gently toned and tipped into a sheet measuring 7.25" x 10.75", with a traces of ghosting and pencil notations on verso. Chipping along top edge, with light creasing.
