Description

General Van Dorn questions the change in territory under his command after his loss at the Second Battle of Corinth

Earl Van Dorn Autograph Endorsement Signed. On verso of a fair copy letter from R. W. Memminger. Fair copy letter is one page, 7.75" x 12.25"; Jackson, Mississippi; November 12, 186[2]. Memminger writes to Van Dorn notifying him of a change in the territory his military command will cover: "...until further orders your Military District will extend from Big Black River to the line of the Miss Central R.R. thence to one mile south of Grenada thence due West to the Mississippi River. Panola & all points North of that line to be under the command of the commanding Genl of the Army of West Tennessee."

Van Dorn pens a lengthy endorsement on the verso on November 14, 1862: "I have just received the letter of which the within is a copy, and thinking there may be some mistake in it I respectfully refer it back to know if there is - By reading the letter, as directed to me, my District will be the county between Big Black River and the line from a point south of Grenada to the Miss. River, which will relieve me in command of this army & transfer me to Vicksburg or Jackson. Earl Van Dorn / Maj. Genl."

Van Dorn had recently been defeated at the Second Battle of Corinth on October 3 and 4, 1862. Van Dorn received much of the blame for that defeat. He had been placed in command of the Army of the West Tennessee, which was organized just a few days prior to the battle. After the defeat, the Confederates sought to reorganize their forces. Van Dorn was removed from command of the Army of the West Tennessee (which was merged with another newly formed district) in December and the letter offered here was written during that process. Van Dorn's endorsement points out that he is effectively being removed from command. He would eventually be transferred to a cavalry corps.

Condition: Vermin damage along the right margin causing loss of text to just the year in the date of the fair copy letter. Van Dorn's endorsement and signature are not affected. Uneven toning, darker at the edges. Paper loss along the top fold and a few stray spots and staining. Red ink notation at top margin of fair copy letter.

Provenance: From the Private Collection of a Mississippi Gentleman.
