Description

Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna Letter Signed "A.L. de Sta. Anna." Two pages, 7" x 8" (sight), "Manga de Clavo", Veracruz; January 7, 1839. Addressed to Francisco P. Vazquez and written in Spanish. A translation reads in full: "Overwhelmed with gratitude for the affectionate feeling expressed in your two letters of December 23 and 30. I have felt that the irritating condition of my health and numerous urgent occupations which I have unwantingly been obliged to care for, had until now deprived me of the pleasure of answering your missives. The merit that my friends have wished to give to the painful part I felt in the glorious triumph of the fifth of the month, and the noble cause in whose defense I was and am willing to sacrifice myself, make my personal suffering become a glorious satisfaction for which I thank you most profoundly for your contribution. I also thank you for sending your highly appreciated pastoral which I consider a true gift. I have always been convinced that without divine help, all human effort is insufficient to assure victory. I remain your passionate friend and faithful servant." The first page of the letter has been photocopied so that both sides may be visible when matted and framed to the overall size of 30" x 18.5". Framed along with a lithograph of Santa Anna and an information plaque.

After attempting to crush the Texas revolution by capturing the Alamo, Santa Anna was defeated and captured by General Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. After losing to the Texans, Santa Anna returned to his estate, Manga de Clavo, from where he would continue to meddle in negotiations with the United States, despite lacking the authority to do so. Although he briefly served as president of Mexico on 1839 and again in 1841, he finally returned to Mexico City in 1874 and died in poverty two years later.

Condition: Light uneven toning throughout. Minor ink smudging in places. Boldly signed.
