Description

Zachary Taylor Presidential Franking Signature on Cover. 8 x 3 3/4 inches, postmarked Washington, D.C.; June 1 [1849 or 1850]. A postal cover bearing the presidential franking signature of Zachary Taylor, signed "Z. Taylor" at the upper right and stamped "Free" at the postmark. Addressed in another hand to "His Excellency Geo. N. Briggs, Governor of Massachusetts, Pittsfield, Mass." With intact red wax seal on the verso.

Taylor received franking privileges upon assuming the presidency in March 1849, and died just sixteen months later. Due to his short tenure in office, his is a notably scarce presidential autograph.

Condition: Lightly toned with scattered soiling. Edges reinforced with later cardstock. Remnants of adhesive from previous mounting at edges on verso, repaired with archival tape.
