Description

Antoine Lavoisier Letter Signed. One page, 7 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches, Paris; November 11, 1789. Letter in French addressed to Monsieur de la Sorte informing him that they have received his statement and two bills. The letter reads, in part, "We shall indicate to M. de Pleignet to have delivered to you a few barrels of fine elite powder. He will prepare himself to take care of your needs... for fine ordinary powder." Signed, "Lavoisier" and countersigned by two others.

Remembered as the "Father of Modern Chemistry," Lavoisier made pioneering contributions to the field that included improving understandings of combustion. In 1775, Lavoisier was appointed a commissioner of the Royal Gunpowder and Saltpeter Administration and spent years attempting to improve upon the substance through the purification of the elements involved. He is likely referring to his various gunpowder offerings here. Five years after sending this letter, Lavoisier was arrested by the French revolutionary government and executed by guillotine.

Condition: Creased along folds. Irregular left margin with some very small open tears. Lower corners folded.
