Description
Albert Einstein Typed Letter Signed "A. Einstein". One page, 8.5" x 11", Princeton, New Jersey; February 24, 1954. A thank you letter addressed to Myrna Ford, who had written a letter to the editor defending Einstein against accusations of communism. The letter reads, in full:"Congressman Coffee has sent me the answer you have written to the remarks of Mrs. Corbally Kuhn. It seems to me that you have well written what had to be said on this occasion. It was a very good characterization of the present political situation."
Included are both Ford and Kuhn's news clippings as well as John Coffee's typed signed letter to Mrs. Ford, dated February 18, 1954. This letter reads, in part: "I congratulate you on your grasp of the world situation as revealed in your most interesting and moving article. I know Dr. Einstein. He is fearless, brilliant, undeterred by the foul animadversions of lesser minds. He is a genuine and militant protagonist of the democratic process. He is disgusted with our insenate alliances with dictatorships of the fascist variety, such as that exemplified by El Caudillo, Franco, of Spain... (signed) John M. Coffee."
Irene Kuhn had written an article that accused Einstein of communist sympathies, entitled "Einstein Can Be Wrong". In the article, Kuhn argued that, by advising members of the academic world to refuse to testify before the congressional investigation committee, Einstein was forwarding the communist agenda and had been doing so for fifteen years. Kuhn did not accuse Einstein of being a Communist, but blamed his "absent-mindedness" and "ignorance" for acting against McCarthy and his committee. In opposition, Myrna Ford wrote a letter to the editor to defend Einstein. She, in contrast, argued that Einstein was in fact fighting Fascism and against the potential parallels between the United States and Nazi Germany.
Condition: Flattened mail folds, with light edge toning. There are a few spots of soiling, with a darker line of soiling along the right edge. The right edge also has creasing, with chipping and minor paper loss.
