Description

Abraham Lincoln: Signature and Samples of His Handwriting. Three Lincoln holograph items, including a signature cut from a letter (inscribed "Yours truly, A. Lincoln") and two scraps of note paper with inscriptions in Lincoln's hand. One reads: "Joseph Richardson" and the other "Richard M. Abrams, Co. A. 6. N.J./ Joseph S. Smith, C. A. 11. N.J." Richardson was charged with desertion and scheduled for execution, but Lincoln ordered a suspension of the sentence and asked General Meade to forward the particulars of the case for his review. Abrams and Smith were also charged with offenses and their cases were appealed to President Lincoln who asked Meade for details. Abrams was discharged from the army on June 12, 1864 while Smith returned to active duty and survived the war. The Lincoln autograph has been affixed to an oblong card.
