Description
George Washington Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.25" x 8.75", Head Qrs State of New York; May 15, 1783. The letter was written during the last few months of the Revolutionary War and is addressed to Miss [Sidney] Lee, the sister of the late General Charles Lee. It reads in full:"Madam,
Pursuant to the promise in my last, I wrote to a Gentlemn who I thought most likely to obtain an authentic Copy of your Brothers Will, and have received an answer, of which the Inclosed is a Copy-When I get the Will it shall be forwarded, notwithstanding Copies there of appear to have been sent to you heretofore.

General Charles Lee died of a fever October 2, 1782. Sidney Lee had been writing to Washington since January of 1783 in the hope that he could assist her in obtaining a copy of her brother's will. Charles Lee had made a new will in America shortly before his death and Sidney was the primary beneficiary.
