Description

Theodore Roosevelt: Terrific Signed Berryman Cartoon of TR and the Teddy Bear. This 14" x 15" cartoon on heavy stock is an original artwork done in ink. It was done by Clifford Berryman of the Washington Evening Star, perhaps the most accomplished newspaper cartoonist of the twentieth century. Berryman was famous for "inventing" the teddy bear after the emergence of a story about TR refusing to kill a bear cub on a hunting trip. The cartoon shows TR with a bag of gifts, like Santa Claus, which include "Inheritance Tax/ Income Tax/ Federal Control of Mineral Lands." A little teddy bear is pulling pages from the "Democratic Recipe Book" while a disgruntled William Jennings Bryan exclaims: "I always said he was a Democrat." The artist has inscribed the cartoon at the top: "Success to Cory, Who is trying to make 'Heroes of a Hard Bunch' With best wishes C. K. Berryman." Aside from a small border tear at the top, it is in excellent condition. It probably dates from 1908 and is one of the best political cartoons of its type we have ever seen.
