Description

Andrew Johnson Military Commission Signed "Andrew Johnson." One partially printed page of vellum, 16" x 19.75", Washington, D.C.; April 7, 1866. Conferring upon "Rufus Ingalls...the rank of Major General." Countersigned by Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War. Blue paper seal at the top left, along with patriotic vignettes at the top and bottom. Docketing at the top left corner.

Rufus Ingalls (1818-1893), a graduate of West Point, served in what is now New Mexico and California during the Mexican War. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Ingalls served as an aide-de-camp to Gen. George B. McClellan and chief quartermaster in the Army of the Potomac. He remained in the army for another twenty years after the end of the war and, in 1882, was named Quartermaster General of the U.S. Army as a brigadier general. He retired from service the following year.

Condition: Light toning and foxing. Creasing and wear at the corners/ Boldly signed.
