Description
Abraham Lincoln Military Appointment Signed "Abraham Lincoln". One partially printed page sheet on vellum, 14.5" x 18.5" (sight), Washington, D.C.; March 29, 1861. Lincoln appoints "John J Abercrombie...Colonel in the Seventh Regiment of Infantry". The document bears the two elaborate vignettes of the American eagle and the flags, cannons, trumpets and pikes; with paper and wax seal of the United States War Office affixed in the lower left portion of the document. Co-signed by Simon Cameron as Secretary of War, with docketing at the upper left corner. Framed to the overall size of 16" x 19.75".Accompanied by an Andrew Johnson Military Appointment. One partially printed vellum sheet, 14" x 18.5" (sight), Washington, D.C.; July 30, 1866. With a stamped signature of Andrew Johnson, this document appoints "John J Abercrombie...Brigadier General by BREVET". The document also bears the two elaborate vignettes and paper and wax seal of the United States War Office affixed in the upper left portion of the document. Also stamped with the signature of Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War, with docketing at the upper left corner. Framed to the overall size of 15" x 19.75".
Abercrombie (1798-1877), graduated from West Point in 1822, and went on to serve in the Black Hawk War and Seminole Wars. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the 63-year-old Abercrombie made one of the oldest field officers in both the Union and Confederate armies. In early 1865 he was brevetted a brigadier general in the Regular Army, and subsequently retired from active military service in June 1865.
Condition: Both documents have buckling to varying degrees, with creasing at edges and throughout. Both paper seals are intact. Mild foxing and areas of light soiling in places. Lincoln's signature is bold and in good condition.
