James K. Polk Signed Military Appointment. One partially printed page, 13.75" x 16.5" (sight), Washington, D.C.; February 7, 1848. Polk appoints "John J Abercrombie...Major in the Fifth Regiment of Infantry". The document bears the two elaborate vignettes of the American eagle and the flags, cannons, trumpets and pikes; with paper and wax seal of the United States War Office affixed in the upper left portion of the document. Co-signed by William L. Marcy as Secretary of War. Framed to the overall size of 15.25" x 17.75".

The appointment is accompanied by an earlier appointment from Abercrombie's military career. One page, 9.5" x 7.5" (sight), Washington, D.C.; September 1, 1817. This document appoints "J. J. Abercrombie, a CADET in the service of the United States..." and is signed by George Graham as acting Secretary of War. This appointment is framed to the overall size of 10.75" x 8.75".

John Joseph Abercrombie (1798-1877), graduated from West Point in 1822, and went on to serve in the Black Hawk War and Seminole Wars. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the 63-year-old Abercrombie made one of the oldest field officers in both the Union and Confederate armies. He was soon promoted to brigadier general of Volunteers, and commanded the I Corps of 2nd Brigade in the Army of the Potomac during the Peninsula Campaign. He was wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines, but remained with his unit until the end of the campaign. Following this, he was transferred to take up the defense of Washington D.C. In early 1865 he was brevetted a brigadier general in the Regular Army, and subsequently retired from active military service in June 1865. He passed away at the age of 78 and is buried in Philadelphia.

Condition: Polk's signed military appointment has buckling throughout as is typical with vellum documents, with light scattered foxing. The cadet appointment is lightly toned, with small areas of soiling at the lower margin. There is some mild creasing around the paper seal.
