Description

Union General George Armstrong Custer Autograph Letter Signed "G A Custer." One and a quarter pages, 5" x 8.25", on Head Quarters 2nd Cavalry Brigade, 3rd Div. letterhead, n.p. [Custer has crossed out "Defences of Washington" in the letterhead as they were in the field], August 21, 1863. Here, Custer writes a terse letter to his commander Gen. Hugh J. Kilpatrick, who was then commanding the 3rd Division, defending one of his men who disregarded an order from Kilpatrick, in full: "Without investigating the matter in reference to Lieut. North disregarding a certain order of the Brig. Genl. Comdg. the Division, I find on reading the letter, on which your endorsement was made, what I consider sufficient grounds to warrant any officer who understands his duty in disregarding said order. The order was communicated to him by a citizen and that citizen a rebel. I would court martial any officer of my command who would receive and act on any order transmitted through such channels." Unevenly toned at the edges and along the vertical fold. Upper right corner is stained. Text is bright.
