Description
Thomas Jefferson Signed Scallop Top Ship's Passport. One partially printed page, 10.5" x 14.5", New York; July 3, 1806. The passport, No. 151, is signed "Th. Jefferson" and countersigned by Secretary of State James Madison. Papers for the ship Baltic of New Bedford, Massachusetts, attesting to her legitimacy as a merchant ship of the United States. The vessel is described as having "...no guns navigated with Ten men..." Two maritime vignettes, one a harbor scene and the other a frigate under sail, decorate the top margin of the document. The upper engraving is somewhat cut off due to the document's scalloped top edge. An embossed presidential seal is affixed on the lower left corner. Docketing on verso.Condition: Flattened folds with some stiff creasing towards the lower half. Minor soiling along edges, with a small stain at the bottom. Toning on paper seal. Ink is faded, but signatures are still clear.
