Description

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison Scalloped-Top Ship's Passport Signed. One partially printed page of vellum, 10.75" x 15.25", Port of Philadelphia; November 3, 1807. Mediterranean ship's passport, numbered 113, issued to the "Ship Favourite of New York," captained by Erazmus Peirce, and crewed with ten men. It authorized the ship, which had "the burthen of two hundred thirty seven & 54/95th tons or thereabouts...to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hinderance, seizure of molestation." Signed by Jefferson as President, "Th: Jefferson." Countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State. With maritime vignettes and a blind-embossed seal in the lower-left corner. The passport is accompanied by an engraved portrait of Jefferson, which measures 9" x 12".

Condition: Lightly signed by Jefferson, but clearly legible. Fold crosses Madison's signature. Trimmed along top edge. Uneven left edge. Some light, scattered soiling with three small pinholes. Engraved print is uniformly toned.
