Description

George Washington and Thomas Jefferson Appointment Signed. One partially-printed vellum page, 14.75" x 12.5", Philadelphia, August 5, 1791, appointing "Matthew Clarkson of New York...Marshall of and for New York." Signed "G Washington" as President and "Th Jefferson" as Secretary of State, with blind embossed paper seal. Document has been matted and framed with an engraving of Washington and one of Jefferson to the overall size of 40.5" x 23.75". Bright vellum, and ideal for display.

Accompanied by a [Matthew Clarkson]. Benjamin Lincoln Military Appointment Signed "B Lincoln". One page of a bifolium, 8.25" x 13", Princeton, November 5, 1783, promoting "Major Matthew Clarkson...to Rank as Lieutenant Colonel by Brevet". Lincoln has boldly signed under the blind embossed paper seal on the left. Along with a Matthew Clarkson Receipt Signed, dated March 19, 1771, recording the amount of 66 pounds paid to his brother, David Clarkson, by a Mr. Gerrard William Beckman.

Condition: Washington and Jefferson document is in exceptional condition; flattened folds, with light foxing and toning at edges. Other two documents are lightly toned with usual folds. Military appointment has soiling at top and left edge.
