Description

Benjamin Harrison Document Signed. One page, 7 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches, Williamsburg, Virginia; October 23, 1777. A document regarding the receipt of an application for six-hundred pounds, signed by Benjamin Harrison, "Benj Harrison."

The document reads, in large part: "Col. W'm Christian, this day returned into my office an Acct. of the application of the Six hundred pounds p'ce Capt Samuel Walker, the 2nd of August last, for the use of Col. Gists Regmt, & Warr. from the Council of this State."

The application that Harrison references, here, was likely made in response to Maryland raising its bounty for recruits to the Continental Army in August of 1777. The United States' campaign against England was going strong, but Patriot leaders were still anxious that their army's numbers couldn't match the British forces, leading to the passage of multiple bills to raise compensation for soldiers and incentivize greater enlistment numbers. In a letter to George Washington, dated July 8, 1777, Colonel Mordecai Gist discusses sending his brother, Nathaniel (likely the Gist mentioned in this document), to raise additional troops; an endeavor that would have benefited from substantial financial backing.

Condition: Slightly toned with smoothed folds. Uneven bottom margin. Slight separations at the creases. Slight foxing. Left margin reinforced with archival tape. Docketed on the verso. Miniscule pencil notation reading "97" in the bottom left corner.
