Finely Bound by Eleanore van Sweringen
[Doves Press]. The English Bible. Hammersmith:
The Doves Press, 1903-1905.LIMITED EDITION, one of 500 copies on paper. Five volumes. Folio (in eights). Printed in black with red initials. Finely bound by Eleanore van Sweringen in full brick-red levant morocco, with dark brown morocco inlays, elaborately decorated in symbolic gilt motifs and ruled in brown, brick-red doublures decorated with a brown ruled criss-cross pattern and ruled in gilt, purple silk free endpapers, all edges gilt. Each volume stamp-signed and dated in gilt on the rear doublure, each volume also signed on the colophon by Eleanore van Sweringen with details of the binding and decorating processes. Each volume housed in matching gilt-marbled slipcases, edged in matching red-brick levant morocco.
Condition: Spines mildly toned, scattered staining and a few minor scuffs. Multiple ink gift inscriptions in different hands and colors to fly leaves of all five volumes. Early text leaves of volume I moderately foxed as usually found, remaining volumes with scattered foxing throughout, volume III stained in lower margin.
