Albert S. Johnston Autograph Letter Signed "A.S. Johnston." Two pages, front and back, 5" x 8", Camp Floyd, Utah; August 3, 1859. Addressed to his son, with enclosed details of the positions held by Judges John Cradlebaugh and Charles Sinclair. It reads: "I send you this joint letter of Judges Cradlebaugh & Sinclair to the President. I am enabled through their politeness to do so with the understanding that there should be no publication of it or any extract from it. They expect to withhold it from the public till the meeting of Congress. I thought the letter would present you with views of their position & facts which you would find interesting..."

John Cradlebaugh (1819-1872) and Charles Sinclair (1828-1887) had supported the use of federal troops to investigate the Mountain Meadows Massacre, an event from September 7-11, 1857, when approximately 120 emigrants were killed by Mormon settlers. After local governors protested, Cradlebaugh and Sinclair were banned from requisitioning the troops in Utah. Albert Johnston became the second highest-ranking officer in the Confederate Army, but was killed at the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862.
