Freedman's Broadside: "Roster of Officers & Civil Agents, On Duty in the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands", with Two Related Circulars. 11" x 13.5", Atlanta, Georgia, November 1, 1868. Printed by the Office Assistant Commissioner, State of Georgia. The broadside outlines the name, rank, station, duty, and jurisdiction of agents within Georgia. Those who were subordinate to the Assistant Commissioner were tasked with enforcing Bureau policies within assigned subdistricts of the state.The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, was established by Congress in 1865. Also known as the Freedmen's Bureau, this organization was developed to assist former slaves following the Civil War and during Reconstruction. Aid was provided in the form of housing, food, educational resources, and medicine. The Bureau was particularly qualified to help freedmen with labor contracts, but it also established a new health care system; note that numerous surgeons can be seen listed as agents. The Freedmen's Bureau was also extended to impoverished whites living in the South.
Also included are two contemporary printed copies of circular letters from the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, 1) One page, 5" x 8", April 24, 1867, at the bottom is written "To Wm Royal, Agt Bu RS and AS" in unknown hand. Edward Bright of the Southern Famine Relief Commission to Col. C.C. Sibley in regards to complaints from the people of Georgia about too many "red tape" regulations. 2) One page, 4.75" x 7.75", February 24, 1868, signed by unknown, at the bottom is written "Capt Wm. Argal, Agt Bu R.F.V.A.R." in unknown hand. Requests the immediate release of "the names of all freed-people who have been murdered or assaulted with intent to kill, in your sub-district during the year 1876".
Condition: Broadside shows creasing from folds, some toning around the edges, and small amounts of paper loss at edges. Two small holes exists from where the broadside was hung. The circular letters are both toned, with darker toning around edges. Both have two holes punches along left edge.
