Description

Aaron Burr Autograph Letter Signed. One page with integral cover addressed in his hand, 8 x 9 ½ inches; Albany; December 31, 1797. Burr writes to M. D. Henry asking him to pay a rent on his behalf: "Mr. Berry has written to me about the £60 rent and said that you refuse to pay it - I really must insist on your assuming both that and the quarter which will be due 1st Feby - I have asked this of you as matter of favor but you must pardon me for urging it as a matter of right. You must recollect that you employed me in the two causes of G. & B. and that this demand cannot be thought unreasonable. I assure you nevertheless that I will not hold you eventually responsible for any part of these sums, and that if you should not be otherwise reimbursed before the 1 Apl I will repay you these sums - In some way and at any rate you must protect me untill that time from the applications of Mr Berry... A Burr." The integral cover is docketed by the recipient and the cover has a postal marking recording that it was mailed on January 1, 1798.

At this time, Burr was a 41 year old attorney and a prominent figure in New York politics. He served as United States Senator from New York during the years 1791 to 1797, and in 1796 he received a respectable number of electoral votes for President in a losing effort. Despite his exalted public position, Burr faced financial difficulties at various points in his life as reflected in the somewhat desperate language Burr used in this letter as he was being pursued by a creditor ("In some way and at any rate you must protect me"). Burr's financial difficulties became more dire and pronounced in later years, as Burr lived to be 80 years old.

Condition: Letter has bright paper and bold ink. Integral cover has darker toning, with wear along folds and minute separations. Remnants of the wax seal are present. Pencil notation along edge.
