Description
Declaration Signer William Whipple Autograph Letter Draft Unsigned. Two pages of a bifolium, 6.25" x 7.75", Philadelphia; June 4, 1776. Addressed to Meshech Weare regarding raising an additional 750 men from New Hampshire to support the force currently in Canada. Their aim was to maintain and strengthen posts and communication with the province in the coming war. The letter is written on a bifolium with an address panel addressed to Whipple. It reads in full:"We wrote you the 28 Ulto since which Congress have Resolv'd to send a farther Reinforcement into Canada. 750 men including officers will be requir'd of our Colony to serve as Militia until the 1st Decr. the officers to be Commissioned by the Colony. It is absolutely necessary our posts shod. be Supported in that Country for shod. the Enemy get possession we shall certainly have a long & troublesome war on our hand; but if we are successful which by proper Exertions & divine assistance there is no doubt of, this Campaign will place us out of the Reach of their mallice [sic]. You will soon receive the Resolution respecting this reinforcement from the President."
The New Hampshire State Papers records that Weare presided over a resolution on June 14, 1776 which resolved to send "a Regiment of seven hundred and fifty men Including officers, - and that each non-Commissioned officer and soldier receive a Bounty of Six Pounds" as Whipple requested here. Meshech Weare (1713-1786) served as both the first governor of New Hampshire and the first Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court.

Condition: Slight creasing. Paper loss to second page where seal was broken. Lightly toned with rough edge.
