Description

Elijah Clarke Signed Documents Awarding Land to Five Summerlin Brothers for Service in the Revolutionary War. A collection of five certificates dated September 5, 1785 and issued by Clarke to John, Samuel, James, Richard, and Demsay Summerlin. Documents measure in size from 5.87" x 2.5" to 7.25" x 2.5". Clarke awards the men a plot of "287 ½ acres of good land as a minute bounty" for their service in the Revolutionary War. Signed, "Elijah Clarke. Colo."

One of the few patriots in Georgia, Elijah Clarke served as Lieutenant Colonel of the state militia throughout the Revolutionary War. On February 14, 1779, Clarke commanded the colonial forces in the Battle of Kettle Creek, defeating the British redcoats and boosting patriot morale. After royal soldiers recaptured the state in 1780, Clarke fled to the Carolinas to continue his efforts. After the war, Clarke served on the commission of confiscated estates, where he awarded the Summerlin family territory appropriated from British Loyalist families.

Condition: Toning and staining at the margins of all documents, affecting text. Creasing along folds. Occasional foxing. Corners bumped and minor paper loss at margins.
