Description
George A. Custer Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", with an M.B. Brady & Co., New York imprint on verso. Custer is seen standing in a long frock coat in a studio setting, and he is leaning with one fist upon a small table. The portrait was taken on or around February 15, 1864.Custer served with great distinction in the Civil War and was immortalized as the youngest major general in the Union Army at the age of 25. Following his service in the war, Custer would go on to lose his life during his "Last Stand" against the Lakota and Cheyenne alliance of Native Americans at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Superior numbers overwhelmed him and his cavalrymen and all were killed. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.
Condition: Toned throughout, with soiling and wear at the edges and corners. On verso has been written in ink in an unknown hand, "Genl Custer 1st Divis Cav 1st Brigd. A.P." Overall good.
