Description

Wade Hampton III Signed Sharecroppers' Agreement for 100 Acres of Land on His Walnut Ridge Plantation. Three pages of a bifolium, 8" x 12.25"; Issaquena County, [Mississippi]; April 4, 1871. Former Confederate General Wade Hampton signs an agreement to rent one hundred acres of land on his Mississippi plantation. The rent is listed at ten dollars per acre due "on or before the first day of November next." The agreement binds the sharecroppers to put up and maintain fences and that in exchange for Hampton providing mules, horses, and other supplies necessary for farming, they "bargain, sell, mortgage... to said Hampton or his assigns the entire crop of corn & cotton that may be raised on said land." Additionally, "The said Hampton binds and obligates himself to gin & pack all the cotton made by said lessees for five dollars a bale & to pay one dollar a half a cord for all wood delivered by them at the gin-house for the purpose of ginning cotton..." Signed "Wade Hampton" at the conclusion, with a second signature with initials beneath an added clause. Filing dockets on verso.

Fifteen sharecroppers have signed with their marks and include both men and women. Some of the names included are: Jefferson Harper, Robert Miller, John Golden, Frances Harper, Handy Holmes, Stephen Green, and Charley Thompson. Although we cannot say with certainty that these individuals were freed slaves, it is most likely the case that they were. After the Civil War, the majority of sharecroppers were Blacks who were recently freed and had no other means to make a living.

Wade Hampton III lived in Mississippi for eight years after the end of the Civil War. He had inherited Walnut Ridge Plantation from his father and turned to leasing out acreage to generate income. Although the Hampton family owned extensive lands, the former general was cash poor after the war.

Condition: Light toning, with offsetting. Ink has faded in the listing of the names of the sharecroppers and in the engrossment of the date. The integral sheet has some buckling affecting the text resulting in a small tear.

Provenance: From the Private Collection of a Mississippi Gentleman.
