Description

USA Naval Letter from 1st Class Fireman Rodney Chipp on Repelling an Attack of Rebel Troops. Four pages of a bifolium, 7.5" x 9.75", "US Gun Boat Katahdin, Mississippi"; September 29, 1862. On September 22nd, a squadron of Union troops attempted to land at Donaldsonville, Louisiana but was beset by a large force of Rebel guerillas. In this letter to his brother, Joseph "Deyo" Chipp, Rodney recounts how the Katahdin beat back the Rebel forces, ultimately killing 50. He goes on to say he greatly prefers the life of a sailor to that of a soldier, largely thanks to the higher pay and prize money. It reads in part:

"...We are still cruising up and down the river between New Orleans and Baton Rouge and have Bully times Fighting the Guerillas. Last week Butler sent 500 troops up to Donaldsonville, 60 miles above New Orleans and the place where the first Secession Flag was raised in Louisiana. They was getting a lot of Sugar and Cattle that the Rebels had there when all of a Sudden 1500 Guerillas made a dash on them, but the Old Katahdin was around. We opened on them and drove them back faster than they came. We killed 50 the wounded they carried away with them and so it goes almost every day we get a shot or two at some of the Rascals but they are getting afraid of us they keep pretty well back when they see a Gun Boat coming, but they Beauty of it is we can see them a good ways from the Mast Head and 'Big Ben' sends his 'Pills' 5 miles..." The original transmittal envelope accompanies the letter.
