Description
Frederick Douglass Autograph Quotation Signed. One page, 5" x 6.75"(sight), no place; 1866. Douglass writes, "The foundations of this republic can never rest secure till equal suffrage is extended to all the people without distinction of race or color." Signed, "Fred.k Douglass." Matted and framed with an accompanying carte de visite by Warren, to an overall size of 10.25" x 15.5".Born a slave in Maryland, Douglass escaped bondage in 1838 and became a national leader of the abolitionist movement throughout the 1840s and 1850s. After achieving freedom, Douglass moved to Massachusetts and became a preacher at the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Its members included vanguards in the fight to end slavery like Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman. He rose to prominence for his oration skills, three autobiographies depicting his experiences as an enslaved person, and the abolitionist newspaper, the North Star. Douglass quickly became a national source of inspiration amongst free and enslaved black communities. Because he was a runaway slave, Douglass was forced to travel to Europe for two years in 1845 to avoid capture and only returned after abolitionists offered to buy his freedom.
As the Civil War approached, Douglass fought endlessly to keep emancipation and the end of slavery as key goals for the Union administration. Douglass met personally with President Lincoln and recruited several African American men to serve in the notable 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Douglass' contributions to the abolitionist movement cannot be understated.
The close of the Civil War and full emancipation of all slaves did not end Douglass' activism. During Reconstruction, Douglass worked tirelessly to improve the rights of Blacks. One of his most important focuses was on gaining voting rights for Blacks. The quote offered here speaks directly to those efforts. Black men would not be granted the right to vote until ratification of the 15th Amendment in February 1870.
Condition: Quote and carte de visite are both toned. Offsetting to quote. Not examined outside of the frame. Minor scuffs to frame.
