Description
[Revolutionary War]. Loyalty Oath Printed by John Dunlap. One partially printed page, 6.5" x 4.25", Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; October 14, 1777. The text reads in full "I DO hereby Certify, That John Simpson hath voluntarily taken and subscribed the Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance and Fidelity, as directed by an Act of General Assembly of Pennsylvania: passed the 13th day of June, A.D. 1777. Witness my hand and seal, the 14th day of October A.D. 1777." The document was designed to be all-inclusive, mindful of the Quaker prohibition against swearing oaths, giving the option for the person to 'affirm' rather than 'swear.' Signed at the bottom "Joshua [illegible]".John Dunlap (1747-1812) came to America from Northern Ireland. He published the first daily newspaper in this country beginning in 1784, the Pennsylvania Packet. Appointed printer to Congress, his first printings of the Declaration of Independence (forever known as the "Dunlap" issues) were ordered by John Hancock; a total of 200 broadsides were printed the evening of July 4, 1776. This Oath was issued around the time when the British occupied New York. Those in Pennsylvania feared the battle would soon be in their backyards with Philadelphia under direct threat.
Condition: Document has flattened folds with some small separations and tears where folds created weaknesses. Light chipping at edges. Some ink transference where paper was folded.
