Escaped Slave Gordon Carte de Visite.2.5" x 4"
No place (Baton Rouge, Louisiana); circa April 1863
The image depicts a shirtless escaped slave, later known as Gordon or "Whipped Peter", and displays the scarring on his back. On verso, written in pencil is "Nelson O Heppamy".
Gordon had been a slave on a Louisiana plantation and was bullwhipped by the overseer after an escape attempt. His master, Captain John Lyon dismissed the overseer upon hearing of the incident, but Gordon was bedridden for two months and his back was left horribly scarred. In April of 1863, he was able to escape to the Union lines near Baton Rouge, and it was during his medical examination that William D. McPherson took this photograph. Gordon became a guide for the Union Army and later enlisted with the U.S.C.T. He was promoted to sergeant and led an assault at the Siege of Port Hudson.
Condition: Light toning and minor foxing. Light wear and soiling, particularly at the lower left corner.
