Description

[Unknown]. [Biblia Sacra] Latinus bibliis editionis vulgatae. Antverpiae [Antwerp]: [ex Officina Plantiniana, 1618]. Early fore-edge painting depicting and armorial crest of six blackbirds inside a laurel wreath, surrounded by a botanical pattern of leaves and flowers in red, green, and indigo, artist unknown, likely pre-1720. Small quarto. 1055, [30], [50], 85, [3] pages; lacking [A1] general title page. Modern half vellum over marbled boards with gilt-lettered spine. Moderate edgewear, unevenly toned and foxed, rubbed. Four bookplates of Stonyhurst College, one small price sticker, and light pencil notations to front pastedown, endpapers with minor foxing and soiling. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges gilt and gauffered with a simple dot pattern; somewhat shaken, purple library stamp to front blank verso, lightly toned in margins, minor foxing and soiling, evidence of some professional repairs, moderate text block edgewear. Very good book with surprisingly bright, but somewhat worn, early example of fore-edge painting.

Weber, Annotated Dictionary, pages 20-21 (this copy). From the Estate of Randall J. Moskovitz, MD, Memphis, Tennessee
