[Unknown]. Pair of Early Fore-Edge Paintings: The Holy Bible and D. Dionysii Carthusiani. London; unknown: 1603-1657. Early, possibly contemporary fore-edge paintings, artists unknown. D. Dionysii Carthusiani. No place: No publisher, 1603. Early, possibly contemporary, fore-edge painting to the closed edge depicting colorful motif, possibly a Bible verse. 48mo in twelves. 760; [16, index] pages. Full vellum. Traces of faded manuscript ink labels to vellum, rubbed and soiled. No endpapers, ink and pencil notations to upper board verso and title page, ink stamp to title page verso, "Duplum / Bibliotheca / R. Monac," ink stamp to head and tail of text block, "STAM." Internally generally clean, minor foxing and thumbsoiling, fore-edge painting bright but washed out, some dampstaining. Very good with colorful but faded and washed out fore-edge painting.[Together with]: The Holy Bible. London: John Field, 1657. Early, possibly contemporary, fore-edge painting depicting botanical motifs, artist unknown. Contemporary straight grain black morocco stamped in gilt, spine stamped in gilt with gilt-stamped red morocco spine label. Rebacked in grained black calf, corners bumped and rubbed, moderate edgewear. Marbled endpapers; some offsetting and wear, hinges reinforced with navy cloth. Internally generally clean and tight; all edges gilt, light pencil notations, text block toned, minor soiling, moderate text block edgewear and fore-edge painting somewhat faded.
