First edition with MDCCCXLIII on the title-page and 1842 on the copyright page. Octavo (7.25 x 4.5 inches; 184 x 118 mm.). [vii], [1, blank], [17, sic]-328, [2, blank] pages; engraved title-page and seven (out of eight) engravings inserted throughout (many copies lack the frontispiece). Contemporary brown calf, boards triple-ruled in gilt and elaborately stamped in gilt, spine decoratively stamped in gilt; all edges gilt; yellow-coated endleaves. Rebacked at an early date with the original spine laid down. Spine heavily browned and worn; joints were apparently repaired at one time, but are now starting. Hinges cracking; soiling to endleaves; text a bit toned with some occasional foxing and thumbsoiling. Good; housed in cloth slipcase. "The Pit and The Pendulum" appears on pages 133-151. BAL 16137.
