Description

Seventeenth-Century Large Folio Gradual, with Many Illuminated Initials in Period Binding with Brass Ornaments

[Gradual, with Sanctorale. Manuscript on vellum, in Latin, Franciscan use. [Portugal, circa 1660]. Large folio (20.75 x 13.75 inches; 527 x 352 mm.; binding size: 22 x 14.75 inches; 559 x 375 mm.). 166, [1] leaves. Early ink foliation in red in roman numerals in the upper corner of the recto of each leaf, except for the first leaf, where it appears on the verso, because the recto is blank. Written in black ink in large rounded gothic liturgical hand. Black square and diamond notation on five red five-line staves. Two large two-stave illuminated initials (fols. 1v and 37v), numerous one-stave painted initials, some with gilt touches, and numerous black strapwork initials.
In a handsome contemporary binding of brown calf over heavy wooden boards. With heavy brass cornerpieces and centerpieces, and an onlaid Pascal lamb in the centerpieces. Wear to spine ends. One leaf (92) with early repair to vellum at lower corner, just touching one staff line. A few signs of use to a handful of leaves, as expected, but overall a wonderful example, beautifully bound and preserved in remarkable condition.
With an index in Portuguese, written in black ink in an elegant hand. A few annotations in Portuguese.
